Dr. M.S.Swamintahan, an Agricultural scientist / geneticist, is renowned for his lead role in gestating India's Green Revolution. He did this by creating high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice. From 1972 to 1979 he was Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and subsequently Director General of International Rice Research Institute in Manila (1982–88). In 1988 he was elected as President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. In 1990 he founded the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai as a nonprofit NGO. It develops / promotes strategies for economic growth by using environmentally sustainable agriculture, safeguarding biodiversity and creating employment for poor rural women. Among the many national / international awards Dr. Swaminathan has received are Padma Vibhushan (1989), Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership (1971), Borlaug Award, (1979), World Food Prize (1986) & Albert Einstein World Science Award (1986) . He holds over 50 honorary Doctorates from renowned universities around the world.
